Senior Dogs

It's heartbreaking to see elderly dogs languishing in pounds. They are away from home in a scary and uncomfortable environment just when they should be enjoying an easy retirement on the lap of a loved one.

We cannot leave them there to suffer and maybe die. We try to rescue these beautiful souls and give them a loving home with a volunteer foster carer where they get lots of TLC and the best of care. Dog Rescue Newcastle pays for all their vet care and other needs to make whatever time they have left as happy as possible. Usually these seniors need extra vet visits and medication for ailments such as heart murmur, arthritis, tumours, and dental work. Sometimes these seniors are not made available for adoption due to health problems and so they live out their days safe and loved in a foster home.

As you can imagine, this is expensive. Your sponsorship can help pay for essential vet care and also help provide some extras such as a warm sweater or a heated mat in winter; a cooling mat, sprinkler hose or plastic shell pool in summer; medicated shampoo for sensitive skin, special toys, yummy treats, and prescription food.

You can help us by sponsoring a senior dog. Dogs can have more than one sponsor. All donations to DRN of $2 or more tax deductible.

Special Needs Dogs

Most of the dogs we rescue are normal, healthy dogs. But we also regularly rescue dogs that need special care before they are ready for adoption. Often these dogs have been neglected or abused all their lives, such as the dogs we rescued from the Hoarder of Hounds.

These special dogs have physical ailments such as mange, hip dysplasia, heart conditions, hypothyroid, parvo virus, or badly infected ears, skin or teeth. Some have behavioural issues such as being afraid of people or other dogs.

These are the dogs that sit in pounds for a very long time because no one wants them. They are also dogs that owners can't handle or can't afford to pay for veterinary treatment. This is where Dog Rescue Newcastle steps in. If we have an available foster carer, we take the dogs no one else wants and we give them a second chance at a good life.

We bring them into a loving foster home and give them all the veterinary care that they need, including specialist surgery and medicines. Our volunteer dog trainers assist foster carers to work through any behavioural issues. It usually takes many months for a special dog to become healthy enough to be ready for adoption; then they wait many more months waiting for a home.

Your sponsorship can not only help with essential veterinary care but can also provide some extras for a dog's comfort such as a warm sweater or a heated mat in winter; a cooling mat or paddle pool in summer; medicated shampoo, a calming collar, special toys, chewy treats, and prescription food.

We think every dog deserves a chance. You can help us help them by sponsoring a special needs dog. Dogs can have more than one sponsor. All donations to DRN of $2 or more tax deductible.
